There’s a lot of stuff posted on search engine forums and newsletters around the world about how companies who spam the search engines are unethical.  Oftentimes, such information is accompanied with a word of caution regarding the importance of hiring only ethical SEO marketers and consultants. Granted, that’s a relevant discussion; but we should keep focus on the underlying motivations of SEO professionals in promoting a website. In life as in SEO, using sleazy shortcuts seldom leads to a good result, on the long run. This is something all individuals who operate in this industry should keep in mind, while organizing their efforts.  So what about when a potential client comes to you saying “we know exactly what we need” because they read somewhere how SEO should be done. What if such kind of customer will approach you requesting a proposal for 10 doorway pages? All the while, they stubbornly refuse your suggestions to improve the actual website; all they want is to develop a network of fringe websites to improve their rankings. This kind of doorway pages is bound to get easily catalogued in search engines, provided you wrap them neatly, via sitemap linked down below in the homepage of the actual site. When visitors find one of the doorway domains via search engines, they end up making unnecessary clicks before they finally arrive in their desired destination. In this scenario, you’d have to make an important decision: compromise what you know is right and just service the customer, or try to convince him that such a strategy would not be a good option for optimizing his website? The compliance with the requested strategy wouldn’t effectively pertain to dishonesty. Besides that, you might have noticed how the customer’s website already contained varied pages with great content? By complying with the customers request, not only would you overlook that the task he requested would not positively support his strategy; you’d fail to point out the optimal solution that could be achieve by tweaking their actual website with proper search keywords. Whenever you’re required to take sides in a similar dilemma, you should always favor your professional integrity. If the customer won’t react to your advice against using obsolete and pointless techniques, you’d best refuse to take the job. It may sound hard to yield the solid profit that would originate from such a simple job. Not only it will be extremely easy to use software to provide the customer with his exact request, but you’d actually be giving what he’d ask for, right? There is more than a way you could convince yourself there would have been nothing wrong with that. Working as SEO consultant is all about using the right strategies that will provide the customer with best results, rather than compromising your professional integrity for the sake of easy profit. Always keep sight on the larger picture. On the long run, your reputation is much more valuable than immediate profit. A buyer who doesn’t respect your opinion on the long-term benefits for their websites will unlikely be a long-term customer.
